Ayurvedic Ghrita in the modern healthcare system: Challenges and solutions for easy administration

Abstract

Sneha Kalpana represents a sophisticated lipophilic drug delivery system within the Ayurvedic pharmaceutical tradition. Among these, Ghrita (medicated ghee) is prioritized for its ability to cross complex biological membranes, including the blood-brain barrier (BBB). However, the transition of Ghrita from traditional clinical practice to the modern global healthcare market is hindered by significant challenges: poor patient compliance due to unpleasant organoleptic properties, susceptibility to rancidity, dosage imprecision, and "cholesterol phobia." This paper critically evaluates these barriers and proposes pharmaceutical solutions such as soft gelatin encapsulation, self-emulsifying drug delivery systems (SEDDS), and the development of fortified granules. By applying the principle of Samskarasya Anuvartana (property inheritance) to modern drug design, Ghrita can be repositioned as a highly effective, user-friendly therapeutic agent in integrative medicine.
